Open Letter To PA Republican State Committee Members

The following was emailed to PA Republican State Committee Members on 01-15-10:

Dear PA Republican State Committee Member,

The political landscape is radically different for the upcoming 2010 election.  In a recent NBC / Wall Street Journal poll, the TEA Party movement topped both the Democrat and Republican parties in approval rankings:

People are simply not in the mood to have their Primary Election choices pre-selected for them.

  • The pre-selection process by the Republican Party was a disaster in the N.Y. 23rd Congressional District last November.
  • The State’s GOP Chairman in Florida resigned after his unpopular endorsement of “moderate” Charlie Crist over conservative Marco Rubio for the upcoming U.S. Senate primary.

The growing perception is that Pennsylvania is in the process of a coronation.  The party chairman publicly stated that he was pleased for a particular gubernatorial candidate when another candidate dropped out, stating “He does not need a primary” to prove himself.  This is even before the state committee endorsement vote. This only leads to resentment, as reflected in the negative numbers above.

Attendance and roll call votes by individual state committee members are not available to the public, making it an unaccountable process.  Republican voters have no way to verify if their state committee members represented their values, much less if they even bothered to show up.

As demonstrated this summer by members of the TEA Parties, 9-12 groups and town hall participants, the electorate will not tolerate a “clearing of the field” of primary candidates and accept the dictates of either party’s establishment.

Now is the time for the Republican State Committee to remain neutral in this primary.  Let the Republican voters of Pennsylvania decide the Republican Candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor and U.S. Senate.

 Sincerely,

Voters for Republican Values

Jim Powers – Communications Director

TEA Party Movement Tops Republican and Democrat Parties In NBC/WSJ Poll

Despite the constant slams by the Main Stream Media, the TEA Party movement polls well above the two major political parties:

  • Tea Party Movement: VP-20%; SP-21%; N-21%; SN-10%; VN-13%; DK-15%
  • Democratic Party:      VP-10%; SP-25%; N-19%; SN-19%; VN-26%; DK-1%
  • Republican Party:       VP-5%; SP-23%; N-27%; SN-24%; VN-19%; DK-2%

Key: VP=Very Positive; SP=Somewhat Positive; N=Neutral; SN=Somewhat Negative; VN=Very Negative; DK=No Opinion

Discernment Is Needed......

It is telling to see some "well established party figures" trying to jump on this train to gain support through the TEA Party Movement and 9-12 groups here in Pennsylvania.  These include candidates and office holders who say they right things when addressing these groups, but these are......

*  Candidates and office holders who refuse to rule out voting for tax increases by refusing to sign the Americans For Tax Reform (ATR) pledge.

*  Republican State Committee members who refuse to reveal votes cast at Republican State Committee meetings.

* Candidates and office holders who accept donations from organizations not friendly to 2nd Amendment and Pro-Life causes.  PACs controlled by Elsie Hillman are a prime example.

* Candidates and office holders who claim the Pro-Life mantle while supporting pro-abortion candidates over pro-life candidates.

If the recent incidents at 9-12 Group meetings in Allegheny and Butler Counties are any indications, there will be more examples as we get closer to the 2010 Primary.  Discernment is indeed needed.....

Congratulations to Mike Slupe, Winner  - Butler County Sheriff

Congratulations to VFRV Pledge signer Mike Slupe, who handily won the Butler County Sheriff's race by more than a 2 to 1 margin!  Best wishes to Mike and his family.  Butler County will be well served!

"You Lie!" - Part II

UPDATE: On Sept. 30th, the Senate Finance Committee voted down a Pro-Life amendment by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to expressly prohibit taxpayer-funding of abortion in the healthcare bill. The committee also defeated an amendment to protect the rights of doctors and nurses who refuse to perform abortions. Also telling was the amendment offered by Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA).  This amendment required proof of identity for individuals enrolling in the new healthcare plan, but the liberal majority defeated this effort also.

After Congressman Wilson's "correction of the record" on September 9, another falsehood regarding the proposed healthcare legislation still needs to be addressed.

The President stated, "Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions..."  This is not true.  From FRC:

1. The House bill specifically includes it. The Capps amendment explicitly allows abortion coverage in the public health plan and subsidizes health plans that cover abortion. (Passed 30-28 in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, July 30)

2. Senate Democrats admit it. "[The health care bill] would include, uh, it would include, uh, Planned, uh, Parenthood clinics." (Sen. Barbara Mikulski, July 9, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions-HELP-Committee meeting-Planned Parenthood is the No. 1 U.S. abortion chain.)

3. Senate Democrats refused to ban it.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah): "Madam Chairman, would you be willing to put some language in [about] not including abortion services? Then I think you would have more support."
Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.): "...No, I would not, uh, be willing to do that at this time." (July 9, Senate HELP Committee meeting)

4. The mainstream media confirms it. ("Government insurance would allow coverage for abortion," Associated Press, August 5, 2009).

5. The Obama administration includes it in its definition of reproductive health care.
"Reproductive health care includes access to abortion." (Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, July 19)

6. Every amendment to exclude it from health care legislation was defeated by the liberal sponsors. The following is a list of pro-life amendments that would have prevented abortion funding or prohibited abortion mandates for covered services.

  • Rep. Sam Johnson Amendment in the Ways and Means Committee (July 16)
  • Rep. Eric Cantor Amendment in the Ways and Means Committee (July 16)
  • Rep. Mark Souder Amendment in the Education and Labor Committee (July 17)
  • Rep. Joe Pitts Amendment in the Energy and Commerce Committee (July 30)
  • Reps. Bart Stupak and Pitts Amendment in Energy and Commerce Committee (July 31)
  • Sen. Orrin Hatch Amendment #227 in the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (July 13)
  • Sen. Mike Enzi Amendment #277 in the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (July 13)

Finally!  National Republican Senatorial Committee Endorses Pat Toomey For U.S. Senate!

After months of unsuccessful attempts to draft so called "moderates" for the 2010 U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, the NRSC has formally endorsed Pat Toomey.   NRSC Chairman Senator John Cornyn said in a statement:

Congressman Pat Toomey’s life experience and public service make him uniquely qualified to serve Pennsylvanians in the U.S. Senate. Through hard work and self-reliance, Pat Toomey has successfully represented a Democrat-leaning district and accomplished much in his private sector endeavors. Congressman Toomey is a vigorous and determined advocate for the people of Pennsylvania, and he is clearly guided by principles instead of political opportunism.

Who Should Really Head Up the National Republican Senatorial Committee?

While RNSC Chairman Senator Cornyn has aligned the Republican establishment behind the endorsement of "moderate" Florida Governor Charlie Crist for the upcoming U.S. Senate primary, Senator Jim DeMint has endorsed conservative Marco Rubio.

Some words of wisdom from Senator Jim DeMint:

"For months now, Republicans have been looking around, asking everyone they meet who our next leaders will be. And somehow, inexplicably, many of us have grown blind to the diamonds all around us. There are already many young, conservative leaders ready to fight for freedom in
Washington and in state capitals all around the country. But we'll never find them if we only look for well-known politicians or choose our party's direction based on the latest polls instead of timeless principles.”

So Where Are the Retraction Letters To The PA GOP State Committee Members Senator Cornyn?????

You Placed Party Over Principle!

You told PA Republican State Committee members that they MUST support Specter, and he flipped to the Democrats.  Then you tried to draft "moderate" Tom Ridge to challenge Pat Toomey.  In less than 10 days, Toomey in effect has taken out Specter and Ridge in short order.

Before you draft another "moderate candidate of the week" for a primary that is still a year away, perhaps you should stop any pretense of believing in conservative principles and join Specter.

NRSC Pressures PA State Committee Members To Support Specter

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has sent letters to members of the Pennsylvania Republican State Committee, urging support for Senator Arlen Specter's re-election.

The justification used in the March 26th letter from NRSC Chairman Senator John Cornyn is to deny the Democrats a filibuster-proof Senate by re-electing Arlen Specter.

CORNYN LETTER

This is so wrong at so many levels:

*  Once again, a touted pro-life senator is urging support for pro-abortion Senator Specter.

*  Once again, this touted pro-life senator, despite doing tremendous damage to the pro-life cause, will clamor for pro-life support for the next election.

*  Once again, we pro-life Republicans will be called upon to deliver election victories, but shunned and abused during the endorsement process.

Tell your Republican State Committee members to say "No!" to the NRSC!

Tell PA-GOP Chairman Gleason to release any roll call vote on a Specter endorsement by the Pennsylvania Republican State Committee!

It's Time To Bring Accountability To Pennsylvania!

Over the last several years, grassroot efforts to elect conservatives have met with frustration and disappointment in Pennsylvania:

  • The cost and size of government continues to grow at all levels.  Whether it is the local school board, township supervisors, county commissioners, or state legislators, often it is the Republican majority serving on these bodies that are responsible for run away spending and double-digit tax increases.

  • The Republican party endorsement process lacks accountability.  Republican voters have no ability to know how their individually elected precinct, county, or state Republican Committee members voted on contested candidate endorsements.  With no record of individual Republican committee member votes, party elites routinely impose their will and oppose conservative candidates without repercussions.

  • Republican candidates and office holders claim to adhere to conservative values, such as being pro-life, pro-Second Amendment and fiscally conservative.  However, these same people then turn on the conservatives who helped them get elected by endorsing pro-abortion, gun-grabbing, tax increasing candidates.

Are you tired of going door-to-door, manning phone banks, working the polls and donating to a candidate only to have your efforts thwarted by Republicans In Name Only?

Voters For Republican Values is a principle driven organization that will seek to bring accountability back to Pennsylvania politics.  Candidates and office holders who sign the Voters For Republican Values Pledge will be held to a higher standard.  A Voters For Republican Values endorsement will also include a review of the candidates public record.

Unlike other endorsements, the Voter For Republican Values endorsement requires the candidate or office holder to pledge that he/she will not use the trust and authority granted to him/her to support any candidate or group who works against the traditional Republican values as detailed in the Principles Statement.

Voters For Republican Values will be at the forefront in protecting Republican values!
